WE ARE A LANDSCAPING AND GARDEN SERVICE COMPANY THAT HAS MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE LAYING OF INSTANT LAWN JOHANNESBURG. THESE ARE SOME OF THE QUESTIONS MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED BY OUR CLIENTS WHEN CONSIDERING THIS ALTERNATIVE.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO LAY INSTANT LAWN?
Although instant lawn can be laid at any time, it is preferable to establish your lawn in the spring to avoid the cold temperatures and ground-frosts of winter possibly damaging your newly laid grass.

HOW SOON CAN THE NEWLY-LAID GRASS WITHSTAND NORMAL TRAFFIC OF PEOPLE AND PETS WALKING ON IT?
During the first few weeks after the lawn is laid it should be walked on as little as possible, especially immediately after watering. The new lawn needs time to allow the roots of the grass to knit together, leading to a smooth lawn surface.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD THE NEW LAWN BE WATERED?
During the first two weeks after it is laid, watering of the instant lawn is vitally important, but it must be done sparingly – the lawn should be moist but not soaked after watering. During this period it is essential that it is sufficiently watered and never allowed to dry out.

Once the lawn is established, it is advisable to water more generously less often, rather than lightly more frequently. This encourages the development of deep strong roots which will generate healthy foliage. This also conserves water, because shallow watering can be lost to evaporation.

WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR MOWING INSTANT LAWN?
Instant lawn should not be mowed until at least two weeks after it is first laid. Once it is established, it is always preferable to mow gently on a regular basis, rather than letting the grass grow until a drastic cutting is necessary. When mowing, the mower blades should be on a high setting so as to remove only the top third of each blade of grass – if too much top growth is removed, the roots of the grass will weaken and not be able to support healthy growth.

HOW CAN INSTANT LAWN BE PROTECTED AGAINST INSECT INFESTATIONS IN JOHANNESBURG?

Insects that can infest and damage your lawn include ants, harvester termites, mole crickets and lawn caterpillars. These can be controlled with the use of organic sprays and chemical insecticides. If you would prefer not to use chemicals, you could try the environmentally friendly option of attracting birds into your garden with a bird-table or feeder stocked with fruit and wild bird seed – these beautiful and colourful visitors will also feast on the insect population, keeping it under control naturally.

The lawn should be kept well fed with superphosphates and bone meal, especially in the spring, to encourage growth after winter and repair insect damage. Fertiliser should be applied every four to six weeks during summer at Instant Lawn and Garden Services Johannesburg.
